I've been working on a gritty, war-themed Paladin subclass, and I'm happy with the result
This isn't your typical shining knight. The Vanguard Paladin is born in the mud and blood of trench warfare. They're the first over the top and the last to retreat, leading from the front lines.
The whole idea is to never let your allies fall, and give them the ability to keep fighting no matter whether the lose moral or a limb
It is designed with language for 5.5e, to adapt it to 5e, simply replace "casting Divine Smite" with "using your divine smite ability".
