D&D 5e Barbarian: Path of the Trenches - Born in the Mud and Blood of War [Trench War]

Hello good hunter!

Today I want to share a new Barbarian subclass that I’ve been working on: the Path of the Trenches.

This subclass is all about survival in the harshest conditions imaginable. Inspired by the brutal realities of WW1, Trench Barbarians take what others see as weakness—being prone, crawling, or even fighting at a disadvantage—and turn it into their greatest strength. These warriors endure pain, use the battlefield to their advantage, and thrive in the chaos of war.

Here’s what makes the Path of the Trenches:

  • Crawling Creeper (3rd Level): Embrace stealth and movement while prone.

  • Trenchfighter's Resilience (3rd Level): Being prone doesn’t hurt you anymore—in fact, it makes you stronger. Attackers can’t get the drop on you, and you can knock enemies prone with ease.

  • Natural Cover (6th Level): While prone, you gain Half-Cover against spells and magical effects.

  • Blood and Mud (10th Level): Ignore nonmagical difficult terrain, and when you hit prone enemies, deal maximum weapon damage.

  • Crawling Death (14th Level): Crawl at full speed, gain bonus movement, and unleash devastating critical strikes when raging.

The Path of the Trenches is for campaigns with a gritty, war-torn feel. Whether you’re charging through no man’s land or surviving the chaos of a collapsing battlefield, this barbarian endures.

I’d love to hear your feedback!

Take Care,
